What is the Fertility Awareness Method?
The fertility awareness method is a group of methods, including the symptothermal method (which is the method I’ve been using — going on four years — to naturally avoid pregnnacy and keep tabs on my hormone health!)
At it’s most basic level, you track your body’s hormonal changes using cervical mucus, basal body temperature shifts and or cervical position to determine when you are fertile. By doing this you can effectively avoid pregnancy by avoiding or using alternative protection on fertile days without suppressing your cycle or using additional hormones.
It’s great for anyone who wants to avoid hormones, ditch the pill, ditch the symptoms FROM birth control, wants a natural method, wants to be more in-tune with their body, wants to learn more about their body and wants more control over their fertility and body!

How long does this take to learn?
- You can binge all the videos in a few days, but we recommend going slowly and rewatching as needed in order to fully understand the material. The average learning curve is 1-3 months, as It can take some time to fully understand and get comfortable with your own biomarkers.
How long until I can use FAM as my primary birth control?
- We recommend charting for at least 3 full cycles before fully relying on FAM as birth control. This gives you time to understand and differentiate between fertile and non-fertile days and determine how you will manage your fertile window.
Is this course suitable if I am currently on Hormonal Birth control?
- Yes, however, keep in mind that you don’t have a natural cycle while on hormonal birth control, and it may take some time for your cycle to regulate once you come off. FAM can be a great way to start preparing for that transition. You’ll learn how to track your biomarkers and understand your body’s signals, which will help you monitor hormones and fluctuations as you regain fertility. For this reason, we don’t recommend relying on this method as your sole form of birth control straight away, but it can be a helpful tool in conjunction with other non-hormonal methods (condoms, cervical caps, etc.) until you are confident.
Is this course suitable for people who have recently stopped using hormonal birth control?
- Yes, it’s a great resource for women who have recently stopped hormonal birth control and are looking to reconnect with their natural cycles. The course will provide you with the tools and knowledge to track your biomarkers and understand your body’s fluctuations as you regain a natural cycle. For this reason, we don’t recommend relying on this method as your sole form of birth control straight away, but it can be a helpful tool in conjunction with other non-hormonal methods (condoms, cervical caps, etc.) until you are confident.
How long until I can rely on this as birth control once I come off hormonal birth control?
- This will look different for each person. Cycles can be irregular, and biomarkers can be more difficult to interpret immediately following cessation of hormonal birth control. It is recommended to chart at least 3 full cycles before relying on this method as birth control and wait until you feel confident.
What tools do I need?
- To get the most out of this course, you will need a phone (optimally a laptop) to watch the course videos, a printer to print out paper charts, coloured pencils to make charting more fun and easy to read, and a thermometer to take Basal body temperature.
Can I use FAM if I have irregular periods?
- Yes, I have irregular cycles myself. While irregular cycles may take a bit more time to track and understand, FAM is still an effective tool for tracking your fertility once you start charting regularly. The course will guide you on how to interpret your biomarkers, even if your cycles aren’t predictable.
Is FAM suitable for women with PCOS?
- Yes, I have PCOS myself, although it may take a bit more time and attention to identify patterns, FAM is still a valuable tool for tracking your cycle, monitoring hormone fluctuations, understanding your fertility signals and predicting periods. It’s important to be patient with your body during this process.
Can I use FAM for both pregnancy planning and birth control?
- Yes! FAM can be used to help plan a pregnancy or prevent one, depending on how you track your fertile window. The course will teach you how to understand your body’s natural cycles and use this knowledge for both conception and prevention.
How accurate is FAM as a form of birth control?
- The Symptothermal method taught in this course is up to 99.6% effective with perfect use. When used correctly and consistently, FAM is as effective as hormonal methods for preventing pregnancy. We recommend charting at least three full cycles to understand your body’s signals before relying on it solely for contraception.
Will this course help me understand my cycle better, even if I’m not trying to conceive or prevent pregnancy?
- Absolutely! This course is designed to help you better understand your body, monitor your hormonal health, and recognize any cycle imbalances. Even if you’re not planning a pregnancy or using FAM for contraception, understanding your natural cycles is beneficial for overall health and wellness.
